Fantasy Flight Sim

If you had unlimited funds and a talented programming team at your disposal, what flight sim would you make?

My top priority would be a Korean War sim (not nearly enough of those around), modeling not just the F-86 and MiG-15 but also the F4U Corsair, F-80 Shooting Star, F-84 ThunderJet, F-82 Twin Mustang, F9F Panther, F7U Cutlass, AD-6 Skyraider, Yak-9, La-9, IL-10 Sturmovik, etc. Dynamic campaign would be included, of course. :)

Second priority would be a sim covering 1945-1955, probably set in a fictional post-WWII hot war between the USA and USSR. That would give lots of opportunity for cool stuff like the MiG-17 and MiG-19, F8F Bearcat, F3D Skyknight, F-86D Sabre, B-47 Stratojet etc. And not to leave out the other nationalities; could have the Hawker Hunter, Dassault Mystere, late-model Gloster Meteor and DeHaviland Vampire, Hawker SeaFury... Oh man I'm getting carried away. :)

What are y'all's ideas for a fantasy flight sim?

With unlimited funds and talented programming I'd rather go nuts with realism, eye candy and modability for a scalable flight sim engine.

With an über flight sim engine (runnable on big a$$ linux clusters of computers to distribute CPU power) that's more or less open source and delivered with good editing tools I'd love to see what the flight sim community would do with it...

Probably all you mention and more... :-)

No doubt. One thing that I'm wary of with open databases in flight sims (and other games) is that if you're looking for hardcore realism (something I'm a fiend for personally), it can be hard to be sure you're getting the same rigorous study of a plane's flight model, physics, etc. from a fan developed add-on as you would from a full design team with the resources for research. This is not to disparage open source groups or fan mods (Gibbage, for instance, is making several highly regarded and realistic models for the IL-2:FB Aces Expansion Pack), just saying that the quality of fan addons might be unpredictable.

Still, I fully agree with the modular engine for expandability. That adds greatly to the life of a game, and if you have a solid graphics and physics engine, you can extend the life of a game amazingly.
